BREEAM 2011 and Camden - stakeholder engagement
Brought in at the design stage of the process, Lodestar were engaged to write the stakeholder consultation plan and manage the external stakeholder consultation process for Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust in 2010 to manage the stakeholder engagement credits of the Trust’s BREEAM submission for a new Mental Health unit within Central London in 2010.
Working to BREEAM 2008 assessment standards, we worked with the project’s BREEAM assessor to ensure that the Trust would meet the required criteria for the Consultation and Shared Facilities credits in the Management Section. This was a complex project involving many stakeholders with competing priorities. The location of the unit brought particular challenges due to the range of businesses and residential properties surrounding it.
Lodestar ran an initial stakeholder strategy session with the design team to identify and prioritise stakeholders of the project, and set out our proposed approach to consultation. We then were able to write a comprehensive consultation plan, taking into account the internal stakeholder consultation that had already taken place within the Trust.
Lodestar ran an open consultation event for local residents and businesses to come and give input into the proposed plans, as well as distributing internal NHS and external press releases, and advising on future plans for a feedback ‘loop’ to stakeholders. From the feedback gathered at the consultation event and working with the design team to document the previous consultation already undertaken, Lodestar gathered satisfactory evidence to compile a project report to satisfy the BREEAM 2008 assessment criteria
BREEAM has now released the updated BREEAM 2011 New Construction assessment. Lodestar are able to work with the new 2011 assessment standards to ensure projects are able to meet the Man 04 criteria for stakeholder consultation. Elements of Man 04 are a required credit for buildings aiming to achieve Excellent or Outstanding ratings.
